What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

One of the most frequent questions I get from people who are interested in doing hypnosis for the first time is — what does it feel like to be hypnotized? My response to them is that I can only tell you how it makes me feel. Hypnosis has been described in many ways, with many different definitions. The one that seems true to me is: "Hypnosis is a focused state of awareness that enables the subconscious mind to act in a specific way, helping to make positive change as directed by the hypnotist."

A Deeply Personal Experience

As far as what it feels like to be in a hypnotic trance, I imagine it is subjective, and that my experience in hypnosis may be different than yours. But I'll tell you how it feels from my perspective. Whenever I go deeply into trance I feel a general sense of relaxation, and I feel focused on what my hypnotist is saying. I do not try and overthink anything — I just go with the flow of the trance and allow change to happen. I always feel wonderful during a session and I get a floating sensation, accompanied by a warmth in my whole body.

Time Distortion

I also experience something called time distortion. Time distortion is what it sounds like — time can seem to slow down, or speed up. It varies from trance to trance. In short, I love being in trance. The experience is uniquely relaxing and restorative in a way that is difficult to fully describe until you've felt it yourself.

What Hypnosis Is Not

The idea I'm trying to convey here is that being hypnotized feels great, and has nothing to do with "being controlled" or "doing things" against your will. The fact is, that even under hypnosis you will not do anything you wouldn't normally do. Hypnosis is like taking a long nap and waking up feeling refreshed and rested. That, along with making positive change in your life, is why hypnosis is something to seriously consider.
